குடியால் ஒரு கிரமாமே விதவைக் கோலம் பூண்ட கதை தெரியுமா?

மதுக் கோப்பைகளுடன் புது வருடத்தை வரவேற்கத் தயாராக இருப்பவர்கள் நம்மில் எத்தனை பேரோ தெரியவில்லை.

சம்பவம் 1:

ஏலகிரி மலையடிவாரத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள இயற்கை எழிலால் பச்சை வண்ணப் புடவை உடுத்திக் கொண்டிருக்கும் வளமான கிராமம் தான் மடப்பட்டு . ஆனால் இந்தக் கிராமத்தில் வாழும் பெண்களுக்குத்தான் வண்ணப் புடவை உடுத்திக் கொள்ளும் பாக்கியம் நீண்ட நாள் நிலைப்பதில்லை.

மொத்தமே 2000 பேர் மட்டுமே வாழும் இந்தக் கிராமத்தில் உள்ள விதவைகள் மட்டும் 200 -க்கும் அதிகம். இளம் வயதிலேயே கணவனை இழந்து குழந்தைகளையும் குடும்பத்தையும் காப்பாற்ற பீடி சுற்றும் இளம் விதவைகள் அதிகம் உள்ளனர் இந்த ஊரில்.

என்ன காரணம்? குடிப் பழக்கம்தான். மலை சூழ்ந்த இந்தக் கிராமத்து மக்களின் முக்கியத் தொழிலே சாராயம் காய்ச்சுவதுதான். அதனால் இந்த ஊரில் உள்ள பெரும்பாலான ஆண்கள் போதைக்கு அடிமையாகத்தான் இருக்கின்றனர்.

அளவுக்கு அதிகமான குடிப் பழக்கத்தால் இளம் வயதிலேயே உடல் நலம் சீர்கெட்டு குறைந்த வயதிலேயே மரணம் அடையும் இந்த ஊர் ஆண்கள், தங்கள் மனைவியையும் குழந்தைகளையும், குடும்பத்தையும் அவர்கள் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் மீள முடியாத துன்பத்தில் தள்ளிவிட்டு விடுகின்றனர்.

இந்த மடப்பட்டுக் கிராமம் ஒரு உதாரணம்தான் இன்னும் தமிழ்நாட்டில் எத்தனையோ கிராமங்கள் குடிப் பழக்கத்தால் இந்த அளவிற்கோ அல்லது இதை விட மோசமான அளவிற்கோ பாதிக்கப்பட்டு இருக்கின்றன.

சம்பவம் 2:

புது தில்லியைச் சேர்ந்த 25 வயதான தினேஸ் குலேரியோ என்பவருக்கு டில்லி பெருநகர நீதிமன்றம் ஒரு வினோத தண்டனையை விதித்தது. அதாவது டில்லியின் மிக முக்கிய போக்குவரத்து நெருக்கடி அதிகமுள்ள - எந்நேரமும் புழுதி பறக்கும் சாலை ஒன்றின் போக்குவரத்தைப் பத்து நாட்களுக்கு ஒழுங்கு படுத்தும் வேலையைத் தண்டனையாக வழங்கியது.

25 வயதிலேயே பணத்திற்குப் பஞ்சமில்லாத மேல்தட்டு வாழ்க்கை வாழ்ந்து வந்த தினேஷ்-ன் வாழ்க்கை தினந்தோறும் நட்சத்திர விடுதிகளின் மது விருந்துகள், பின்னர் தனியாக பார்களில் மேலும் மது, பின்னர் விலை உயர்ந்த கார்களில் தில்லியின் முக்கிய சாலைகளில் அதிவேகப் பயணம் என்று உல்லாசமாகத்தான் போய்க் கொண்டிருந்தது.

வழக்கம் போல போதைப் பயணம் சென்ற தினேஷின் கார் ஒரு நாள் அவரின் கட்டுப்பாட்டை இழந்து பாலத்தில் மோதி விபத்து ஏற்பட்டு அவர் காவலர்களால் கைது செய்யப் பட்ட போதுதான் தான் அருந்தி இருந்த மது தன்னுள் ஏற்படுத்திய கோர மாற்றம் அவருக்கு விளங்கியது.

மது அருந்தி வாகனம் ஒட்டி விபத்திற்கு உள்ளாக்கிய குற்றத்திற்காகத்தான் தினேஷிர்ற்கு அப்படியொரு வினோத தண்டனையைக் கொடுத்து இருந்தார் அந்த நீதிபதி.

தண்டனைக்காக புழுதி பறக்கும் சாலையில் வெயிலில் நின்றதால் ஏற்பட்ட களைப்பை விட பலரின் முன்னாள் தனக்கு உண்டான அவமானத்தால் கூனிக் குறுகிய அந்த இளைஞர் இனி தனது வாழ்வில் குடி என்பதே இல்லை என்று முடிவெடுத்து விட்டார்.

ஆனால் இந்த தினேஷைப் போல எத்தனை இளைஞர்கள் நமது நாட்டில் இருக்கின்றனர்,

உலக சுகாதார அமைப்பு (W.H.O) இந்தியாவில் குடிப் பழக்கம் பற்றி எடுத்த ஆய்வு தெரிவிக்கும் அதிர்ச்சித் தகவல்கள் இவை,

இந்தியாவில் குடியை பரிட்சார்த்தமாக ஆரம்பித்துப் பார்க்கும் சிறுவர்கள் எண்ணிக்கை தொடர்ந்து அதிகரித்துக் கொண்டே வருகிறது,

குடிப் பழக்கத்தை ஆரம்பிக்கும் வயது என்பது குறைந்து கொண்டே வருகிறது,

மேல்தட்டு மக்களிடம் ஆரம்பித்த பழக்கமான குடும்ப விழாக்கள் மற்றும் தொழில் ரீதியிலான சந்திப்புகள் என்றாலே மது அருந்தும் பழக்கம் என்பது இப்போது நடுத்தர மத்திய நடுத்தர மக்களையும் தொற்றிக் கொண்டு உள்ளது.

மது அருந்தும் பெண்களின் சதவிகிதம் தொடர்ந்து அதிகரித்துக் கொண்டே வருகிறது,

குடும்பத்தில் அனைவரும் ஒன்றாக சேர்ந்து மது அருந்தும் வழக்கமும் பரவ ஆரம்பித்து உள்ளது.

முன்பெல்லாம் குடிப்பவர்களைப் புழுக்களைப் போல பார்த்த இந்திய சமூகத்தில் இப்போதெல்லாம் குடிப் பழக்கத்திற்கு ஒரு சமூக அங்கீகாரம் கிடைக்க ஆரம்பித்து விட்டது.

மதுவினை அளவே இல்லாமல் அருந்தி நிதானம் இழக்கும் அளவுக்கு போதையை ஏற்றிக் கொள்ளும் வழக்கம் இந்தியர்களிடம் மிக அதிகமாக உள்ளது.

மதுவினால் ஏற்படும் சமூக சீரழிவுகள் எத்தனயோ இருந்தாலும் மதுவினால் ஏற்படும் மிக முக்கிய உடனடித் தீமையான மது அருந்தி வாகனம் ஒட்டுவதால் ஏற்படும் விபத்துகளைப் பற்றிப் பார்ப்போம்.

நமது நாட்டில் ஏற்படும் சாலை விபத்துகளில் ஐந்தில் ஒன்று மது அருந்தி விட்டு வாகனம் ஒட்டுவதால் ஏற்படுகிறது என்று சொல்கிறது உலக சுகாதார அமைப்பான (W.H.O) .

மருந்தி அருந்தி வாகனம் ஒட்டி விபத்துகளை ஏற்படுத்திய நபர்களில் 40 % பேர் மிக அதிகமாக (180 மில்ல்லிக்கும் அதிகமாக ) மது அருந்தி இருந்தது சோதனைகளில் கண்டுபிடிக்கப் பட்டு உள்ளது.

மது அருந்தி விட்டு வாகனம் ஓட்டுபவர்களைப் பிடிக்க காவல்துறையினர் திடீர் சோதனைகள் மேற்கொள்ளும் போது சோதனையிடப் படும் நபர்களில் சராசரியாக 35 % பேர் மது அருந்தியவர்களாக உள்ளனர்.

அப்படிப் பிடிபடுவர்களில் 67% பேர் 25-45 வயதிற்கு உட்பட்டவர்களாக இருக்கிறார்கள்.

அதை விடக் கொடுமை என்னவென்றால் மது அருந்தி விட்டு வாகனம் ஓட்டுவதில் எந்தத் தவறும் இல்லை என்று நினைப்பவர்கள் 98% பேர் என்பதுதான்.

தில்லியில் உள்ள தொழில்முறை வாகன ஓட்டுனர்களில் 45% பேர் மது அருந்தி விட்டு வாகனம் ஓட்டுபவர்கள்.

மது அருந்தி விட்டு வாகனம் ஒட்டுவதால் ஏற்படும் விபத்துகளில் மூன்றில் ஒரு பங்கு இருசக்கர வாகனங்களால் ஏற்படுகிறது.

மது அருந்தி வாகனம் ஒட்டுவதால் ஏற்படும் விபத்துகளின் எண்ணிக்கையும், மது அருந்தி வாகனம் ஒட்டிப் பிடிபடும் நபர்களின் எண்ணிக்கையும் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் இரட்டிப்பாகிறது.

இந்தப் புள்ளிவிவரங்கள் கட்டும் உண்மை என்ன?

நமது நாட்டில் மது அருந்தி விட்டு வாகனம் ஒட்டுவதால் ஏற்படும் விபத்துகள் குறித்தும் அமது அருந்தி விட்டு வாகனம் ஒட்டிப் பிடிபட்டால் வழங்கப் படும் தண்டனைகள் குறித்தும் யாரும் பெரிதாக கவலைப் பட்டுக் கொள்வதில்லை.

இதற்குக் காரணம் , இந்தியாவில் மது அருந்தி விட்டு வாகனம் ஓட்டுபவர்களையும் மது அருந்தி வாகனம் ஒட்டி விபத்துகளை எற்படுத்துபவர்களையும் தண்டிக்கக் கடுமையான சட்டங்களோ இந்தக் குற்றத்திற்குக் கடுமையான தண்டனைகள் விதிக்க வழிவகை செய்யும் சட்டங்களோ இதுநாள் வரை இல்லாததே.

இந்திய நாடாளுமன்ற நிலைக் குழு பரிந்துரைகள் இனிமேலும் இந்த விசயத்தில் அரசு மெத்தனமாக இருக்காது என்பதை உணர்த்துவதாக உள்ளது. இந்த சட்டங்கள் அமுலுக்கு வரும் பொழுது பெரும்பாலான தவறுகள் சரி செய்யப் பட்டு விடும் என்றே தோன்றுகிறது.

மது அருந்தி விட்டு வாகனம் ஓட்டுவது சட்டத்தை மீறும் மிகக் கடுமையான குற்றமாகக் கருதப் படும்,

வாகன ஓட்டுனர் உரிமம் உடனடியாக ரத்து செய்யப்படும்,

அதிக அபராதமும் அதிக நாட்கள் சிறைத் தண்டனையும் வழங்கப் படும்.

ரத்த சோதனையில் ரத்தத்தில் மதுவின் அளவு அதிகரிக்க அதிகரிக்க தண்டனையும் அதிகரிக்கப் படும்.

மது அருந்தி விட்டு வாகனம் ஒட்டி விபத்துகளை ஏற்படுத்தினால் அந்தக் குற்றங்கள் திட்டமிட்டு செய்யப்பட குற்றங்களாகவும் கொலை அல்லாத மரணத்தை உண்டாக்கக் கூடிய குற்றங்களாகவும் கருதப் படும்.

அரசு என்னதான் சட்டங்களையும் தண்டனைகளையும் கடுமையாக்கினாலும் மக்களின் மனமாற்றமே இந்தப் பிரச்சினைக்கு நிரந்தரத் தீர்வாக இருக்கும் என்றே எண்ணுகிறேன்..........

Cycle Trailer

A cycle trailer with mild steel plates was constructed at MCRC under the Council for Advancement of People's Action and Rural Technology's project. This has been disseminated as training to 72 village youths. The trailer can be easily attached to a cycle. The carrying capacity is 150-200 kg. Eight such trailers were made at MCRC and 24 at the training centres in four districts of Tamil Nadu.

Does This Always Work?

Adsense has no sense of humor or irony. It reads a page's text and places ads according to those words.

* Sometimes, the results are funny. I have a webpage that is a parody of cat books and computer manuals. But Adsense thinks this is about a real computer, so it places computer ads on the page.

* Sometimes, the results are the opposite of what the user intended. There are political websites that attack opponents. They describe what those opponents will do. And they have Adsense on their website, so of course, if the opponent uses Adwords, the opponent's ads appear on the website.

Can I Decide Which Ads Will Appear?

Not directly. Google's computers place the ads. However, you can influence the ads. The ads are context-relevant to your webpage. If the page is about lions, the ads are about lions. If the page is about mountain lions, the ads are about mountain lions. And if the page is about the mountain lions of Palo Alto, then the ads are about mountain lions in Palo Alto. The more specific your page, the more specific the ads will be.

This means you can create informative, expert webpages on topics that have high value, and then add Adsense. These keywords will have high bids. You will make money from those pages.

For example, mesothelioma is a disease caused by asbestos. The asbestos class action lawsuits are in the billions of dollars. Law firms pay $160 or more per click to find people to join the class action. The law firm will earn hundreds of millions. The same for keywords that have to do with legal services for large companies, corporate banking and financing, home loans, and so on.

What Happens If I Click on My Ads?

If you click more than several times on your own ads, Google's computer will notice. They will close your Adsense account and blacklist your URL. So don't do that.

If you spam all your friends and family and ask them to click on your ad, Google's computer will notice the surge in clicks. They'll cancel those clicks and they may cancel your account.

Can I Put Adsense in a Blog?

Yes, Adsense can be added to a blog. However... a blog may have ten different topics, and that would confuse the Google computer, because it wouldn't have a single subject for the blog. so the ads would be random.

If every entry in the blog is about aquariums, then the Google software would read that, see that it's all on one subject, and it would display ads that have to do with aquariums.

If you have a Search box in your website, use the Google search box. When people use Search and click on the ads, you get part of the click fee.

* Log into Adsense and click Search Settings tab. Just as with Adsense, you can modify the layout. This produces the code and you place that into your website.

GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation devices -- those talking screens with maps that give you real-time directions to wherever you're going (as you're going there) -- used to be the province of the well-to-do with high-end cars. But nowadays, real-time navigation technology is available for all budgets in all sorts of shapes, sizes and feature packages. So which type of GPS is for you? Should you spend a mere $2.99 to get directions on your cell phone or splurge up to $500 for a high-end portable? Are factory-installed navigation systems you get with a new car better than a standalone portable? Do you really need an MP3 player with your traffic directions? For answers to these questions and more, check out the five things to consider before you buy a GPS, which we've organized by the most commonly asked questions on the following pages
Should I just use my cell phone's GPS feature, or is it worth splurging for a factory-installed GPS in my new car or a high-end portable navi unit?

It used to be a clear decision: To get a feature-rich, accurate, and user-friendly GPS navigation system, you had to spring for a factory-installed model, which is conveniently built into the dashboard of a car either by the manufacturer when you buy a new car, or by an after-market specialist. While built-in factory-installed navi systems still beat their portable brethren with certain features – large, easy-to-read-and-navigate screens, thorough travel info, and seamless integration with the rest of your car's audio -- the gap between the two is not nearly as wide as it was just two or three years ago. For one thing, many portable standalone GPS units now offer turn-by-turn directions with actual street names, robust local travel information (gas stations, parking, restaurants, etc) that's integrated into maps, and live travel updates, while even some cell-phone-based devices offer instant route recalculation if you miss a turn.

Given the potential similarity in features that's available in all three types of GPS navi units, we think it ultimately boils down to money. இந்த நிலையில்தான், இன்றும் கல் உடைக்கும் தொழிலாளியாக இருந்து கொண்டு அவல நிலையில் இருக்கும் பிற தொழிலாளிகளுக்காக மாநில அளவில் ஒரு சங்கத்தை திண்டுக்கல்லில் நிறுவி போராடி வருகிறார் எஸ்.பி. ஞானமணி.

கல்லுடைக்கும் தொழிலாளர்களின் குழந்தைகள், கல்லுடைக்கத்தான் தகுதியானவர்கள் வேறு தொழிலுக்கு தகுதி அற்றவர்கள், அவர்களால் அதை செய்ய இயலாது. காரணம் அதற்கு அவர்களுக்கு கல்வி அறிவு போதாது என்ற சூழ்நிலை வந்தது.

இந்த அவலத்தை போக்கியே ஆக வேண்டும் என்று ஒவ்வொரு நொடியும் சபதம் எடுத்துக் கொண்டேன். அதன் விளைவு தான் இந்த பள்ளி துவங்கப்பட்டது என தன்னம்பிக்கையோடு பேசினார்.

அது மட்டும் அல்ல கல்லுடைக்கும் தொழிலாளர்களை கொத்தடிமைதனத்தில் இருந்து மீட்டு மறு வாழ்வை ஆர்வமுடன் வழங்கிய முன்னாள் மாவட்ட கலெக்டர் விக்ரம் கபூர் நினைவாக அவரது பெயரை கல்லுடைக்கும் தொழிலாளர்கள் வசிக்கும் பகுதிக்கு சூட்டி தாங்களும் நன்றியை மறக்காதவர்கள் என்பதை நிரூபித்துள்ளனர்.

Mumbai, June 6: Despite a significant improvement in asset quality, the country's banking industry might see its bad assets inching up in the months ahead, particularly in retail segment, Global rating agency Fitch said on Friday.

The loan growth, which moderated into 24 per cent in last fiscal is expected to be in the range of 18-20 per cent in FY 09, Fitch Rating's Senior Director, Ambreesh Srivastava said at a global banking conference in Mumbai.

"The absolute NPLs rose in FY08 after declining for several years...We would expect that the NPLs, especially in unsecured consumer lending, could now start inching up," Srivastava said.

Rising badloan assets had prompted many banks to sell their sticky assets to asset reconstruction Companies, in order to transfer the risk and clean up thier balance sheets.

A few banks had also discontinued their small ticket personal loans reportedly owing to the rising defaults and are reworking loss assumptions on credit cards, Srivastava said.

Besides, despite an improving credit culture and risk management systems, Net Interest Margin (NIM) of Indian lenders remained under pressure, he said, however, adding "those banks with larger proportion of low-cost deposits have been found less affected."

Fitch Rating's Asia Pacific, Managing Director, James McCormack, said the agency would review the existing 'BBB-' in the third quarter, given the rising pressure on fiscal side and the widening fiscal deficit owing to ‘populist spending’ of the government.

McCormack was reffering to the Rs 71,000 crore farm-loan waiver programme announced in the Union budget and the sixth pay commission report.

"India is already having a weak fiscal position as compared to its peers," McCormack said.

Fitch said Indian banks would continue to raise capital to meet the operational risks under Basel-II and AS-15 norms, besides to fuel their business growth.

Also, larger private banks may increase market share at the expense of government banks while consolidation in the longer-term may enhance Indian banks performance and operational efficiencies, Fitch said.

Meet six students who have already taken the entrepreneurial leap.

Laima Tazmin

Age 17, LAVT, New York City

When we first wrote about Laima Tazmin in 2004, as part of an article titled "25 Entrepreneurs We Love," she was a high school freshman with her own website design company, LAVT, in New York City. Today, as Tazmin is finishing her last semester, her business continues to expand. Now it manages 20 ongoing projects, including designing banner ads starting at $1,000 each, for clients such as the producers of the movie Saw II and of Kanye West's second album, Late Registration.

The company earned $25,000 in 2006, and Tazmin put that money toward paying family expenses while her mother struggled to find work. "It was overwhelming, but I managed," says Tazmin. "The independence and maturity I learned helped my adult clients feel calm and comfortable."

Tazmin hasn't found it easy to make the transition from solo businessperson to manager. Lacking time for supervision and coaching, she has burned through 10 freelance designers. The problem is that, in addition to her company, she maintains a roster of high school activities. She's a shooting guard on the basketball team ("I like scoring points--I'm not a passer," she says) and works on the yearbook staff ("I get a little too control-ly," she admits). Tazmin, who will attend Columbia University in the fall, is also working, predictably enough, on starting a second business. It will create Web portals for college towns.

Both age 17, Bling Buckles, Oakland, California

Derin Coleman and Rayneshia Rodgers have been friends since the seventh grade and business partners since 2004. Together, they run Bling Buckles, an Oakland, California, company that sells custom chrome belt buckles with white rhinestone lettering for $25 apiece. Bling grossed $2,075 during the last academic year, selling belts primarily at events sponsored by BUILD, a program in the Bay Area created to teach high school students in low-income school districts about entrepreneurship.

"They work great together," says Curtis Below, an executive at GetActive Software, who serves as the company's mentor. "Rayneshia is the more outgoing of the two, chatting up customers and constantly throwing out ideas. Derin is mature and does whatever needs to be done with a smile on his face."

The partners, who are juniors at a charter school called Lionel Wilson College Preparatory Academy, were tested during their first holiday season in business, when Bling faced a big backlog of orders. "Derin and I were making buckles over Christmas vacation and on our lunch hours," says Rodgers.

Just as the company is taking off, however, its future is in doubt. Rodgers and Coleman are applying to colleges far apart. In fact, in addition to launching and running a company, BUILD helps students prepare for the college board exams. Eight out of every 10 BUILD graduates have been the first members of their families to go to college.

Not that the passion for entrepreneurship is lost in the shuffle: "I like school, but running a business feels more real," says Coleman. "Oh, I can learn how to make a million dollars? Okay, I'm listening."
Omar Faruk

Age 18, BlueStream, New York City

Omar Faruk believes that social entrepreneurship can make the world a better place. He's CEO of BlueStream, a Web management company that specializes in helping nonprofits with limited resources. The business grossed $40,000 in 2006 and earned Faruk the Youth Entrepreneur of the Year award given out by Ernst & Young and the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship. "Make a difference first, make the money later," Faruk says.

In 1997, at age 9, Faruk immigrated with his family from Noakhali, Bangladesh--"The district that Gandhi visited," he notes--to New York City. The family had been well off back home but ended up with eight people sharing a three-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. By the time Faruk enrolled in high school, he was spending a lot of time online and learning the ins and outs of Web design. Three years ago, he started BlueStream to build websites at a cost of $200 and up for fledgling nonprofits. The idea was to marry his interest in social activism to his interest in technology. One of Faruk's customers is Intertradingcorp.com, an organization that helps women in Guyana sell crafts on eBay. "Omar helped the idea to flower, and he makes the world of commerce so much fun," says Avi Shiwnandan, Intertradingcorp.com's founder.

In the meantime, Faruk is trying to bolster his grades in an effort to get into Babson College, where he hopes to study social entrepreneurship. Shiwnandan, for one, is not worried about Faruk's prospects: "I have no doubt he will make a lot of money in his lifetime, even if it isn't his main ambition."
Jake Fisher and Weina Scott

Both age 17, Switchpod, Miami and Rochester, Minnesota

Only five years ago, two enterprising teens might have mowed lawns to earn spending money. Today they can start a company on the Web. That's how it worked for the co-founders of Switchpod, Weina Scott and Jake Fisher. And, oh yeah, they live 1,440 miles apart--she's in Miami, and he's in Rochester, Minnesota.

The two met via a message board in June 2005, got to talking about podcasts, and started Switchpod within the month. Scott already had a Web design business, which she started at age 13. Fisher, for his part, says, "I wanted to get into a business at the beginning of some new technology bubble."

Their basic podcasting package, which covers hosted space on their servers, costs as much as $30 a month, but they'll give it for free to customers who take out an advertisement on their site. By the time Switchpod's product had generated 800,000 downloads, a company named Wizzard Software came calling. The Pittsburgh-based business, which makes speech-recognition and text-to-speech technology, was looking to add podcasting to its product mix.

Wizzard Software CEO Chris Spencer, 37, remembers that it took him a while to realize that the students he was negotiating with were in high school rather than college. Odder still, Scott and Fisher met face-to-face for the first time at Spencer's home in Fort Lauderdale, where their parents brought them to sign the paperwork transferring ownership of Switchpod to Wizzard in an all-stock transaction worth $200,000. The sale also provides the partners with annual salaries of $40,000 for a 20-hour workweek. It acknowledges that their schoolwork comes before business

Read the Fine Print

A couple buying a car and looking closely at the sales agreement

So, what's the catch?

While there are some great new car prices to be had today, it's always smart to be sure you understand the offers -- and whether there are any "qualifiers," "restrictions," "exclusions" or "limitations" that could affect you.

Most ad offers -- whether TV, print or online -- showcase the big numbers and best new car prices in very large type -- with any stuff that might not be so appealing scrunched down into micro-sized print at the every bottom of the page (or read-through at warp speed by an announcer who might as well be speaking Swahili, as far as your ability to follow what he's saying).

Here are some things to be on the lookout for:

"Offer only available in FLA, GA, SC... " (and so on). Many incentives offered by the automakers are regional -- meaning, if you don't live in one of the areas where the deal is good, the deal is not available to you. The same new car prices might be $1,500 less (or more) just by crossing the state line.

"All estimates are computed on the basis of a 10 percent down payment..." Some financing deals are contingent on things like the buyer coming up with a predetermined cash down payment. In the example above, you'd need $4,000 in cash at the time of sale to take advantage of the advertised low-rate financing on vehicles with a new car prices of $40,000. If you don't have the cash down payment, they may stick you with a higher finance rate.

"Offer not compatible with other offers..." This means you may not be able to get both low-rate financing and "x" dollars cash back. You have to pick one or the other. It's important to run the new car prices before you are in the pressure cooker of the dealer's store, too. This way, you'll know ahead of time whether it makes more sense for you to go with the lower-rate financing -- or the rebate.

Dealer participation may affect savings... " This means the offer's contingent on the dealer's "participation" in the program (rebate/cash back, special rate financing, etc.) being advertised by the automaker. Remember: Dealers are independent operations; they may sell Fords or Hondas, etc. -- but you are not dealing with Ford or Honda, per se. Be sure the dealer you're negotiating with is, in fact, participating in the rebate/cash back deal you saw on TV. He may not be. Don't assume he is.

"For Bonus Cash, buyer must take retail delivery by ..." As implied, the deal on new car prices is only good if you buy the car before a specific date. This can put pressure on the consumer to make a snap decision -- or purchase a car "off the lot" that may not have all the features and equipment (or color) the buyer wanted, etc.

Estimates do not include the cost of transportation and handling charges, dealer prep, labor..." This is a potential loophole big enough to drive a Hummer through. The new car prices you thought you were getting could very well turn out to be nothing like the new car prices you actually end up getting -- if you are not very careful. Insist that every charge/fee associated with the proposed purchase be clearly spelled out, in writing, before you commit to buy. "Dealer prep" alone can add hundreds to the bottom line -- negating any savings you may have expected via the "cash back" lure that got you into the showroom.

Compare Cars
"Not all buyers will qualify..." Most finance offers have this little caveat somewhere in the fine print. If you are a young/first-time buyer -- or have less than exemplary credit -- that 1.9 (or lower) finance rate you were counting on may be unavailable to you. It's a good idea to check alternate sources for financing -- such as a bank or credit union -- just in case the deal being offered by the automaker's finance arm won't be extended to you.

Residency and other mileage restrictions may apply..." This means the offer might be contingent not just on where you happen to live -- but also on how many miles you drive annually (lease contract). It doesn't do you much good to get a great deal on a lease if your annual mileage exceeds the maximum allowable -- at which point you'll get whacked with additional charges. It's always best to over-estimate your annual mileage -- just to be safe -- when it comes to lease contracts.

"Vehicle shown may contain optional equipment available at additional cost..." In other words, what you see (in the ad) may not be what you get (at the dealer). Be sure the car you want -- with the equipment and new car prices you want -- is in fact available under the terms of the offer. A great deal on a car you don't want isn't much of a bargain.

"Bonus cash offered on eligible vehicles must be financed or leased through (the automaker's captive finance arm)" This means that in order to get the offered cash back/rebate, you have to finance the new car prices through the automaker's own finance company (Ford Credit, GMAC, etc.) rather than a credit union or private bank. You may also not be able to get the cash back if you pay cash for the vehicle. Basically, the automaker is looking to recoup the "cash back" by making money from you via interest payments. It may still be a good deal for you -- or not.

The key to negotiating the fine print with new car prices is to take the time to read and understand every clause, caveat and potential loophole before you sign anything or cut a check.

சிதம்பரம்: ஓதுவார்கள் தேவாரம், திருவாசகம் பாடிச் சென்ற பின்னர், கோவிலைக் கழுவி பரிகார பூஜை செய்துள்ளனர் நடராஜர் கோவில் தீட்சிதர்கள். இதுகுறித்து இந்து அறநிலையத்துறை அதிகாரிகள் விசாரணை மேற்கொண்டுள்ளனர்.

கடந்த சில நாட்களாக சிதம்பரமே பெரும் பரபரப்பில் மூழ்கிக் கிடக்கிறது. தமிழா, தீட்சிதர்களா என்ற பெரும் கேள்விக்கு விடை காண முடியாமல் சிதம்பரம் மக்கள் பெரும் டென்ஷனில் உள்ளனர்.

இந்த நிலையில் நேற்று விவசாயிகள் விடுதலை முன்னணியைச் சேர்ந்த 25 பேர் தாங்கள் தேவாரம், திருவாசகம் பாடவிருப்பதாக முறைப்படி அறநிலையத்துறை அதிகாரிகள் மற்றும் கால்துறையிடம் தெரிவித்தனர்.

இதையடுத்து அவர்களில் ஐந்து பேர் மட்டும் திருச்சிற்றம்பலத்திற்குள் சென்று பாடலாம் என அனுமதி அளிக்கப்பட்டது. இதையடுத்து உள்ளே சென்ற 25 பேரும் திருச்சிற்றம்பலத்திற்குள் செல்ல முயன்றனர்.

ஆனால் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்ட ஸ்டாலின், எழுமலை, ரவி, முருகன், சண்முகம் ஆகியோர் மட்டுமே உள்ளே செல்ல வேண்டும் என போலீஸார் தெரிவித்தனர். இதையடுத்து அந்த ஐந்து பேரும் சட்டைகளை கழற்றி விட்டு உள்ளே சென்றனர்.

அவர்களுடன் மாவட்ட எஸ்.பி. பிரதீப் குமார், டி.எஸ்.பி. செந்தில்வேலன் உள்ளிட்டோரும் சட்டைகளைக் கழற்றி விட்டு உள்ளே சென்றனர்.

மரியாதை செய்த தீட்சிதர்கள்:

உள்ளே சென்ற 5 பேரும், தேவாரத்திலிருந்து ஒரு பாடலையும், திருவாசகத்திலிருந்து ஒரு பாடலையும் மொத்தம் 20 நிமிடங்கள் பாடினர். அதன் பின்னர் அவர்களுக்கு தீபாரதானை காட்டி, மாலை அணிவித்து, பட்டாடை அணிவித்து தீட்சிதர்கள் மரியாதை செய்தனர்.

தீ்ட்டு கழிப்பு:

ஆனால் அதன் பிறகுதான் குழப்பம் நடந்துள்ளது. மாலை, மரியாதையுடன் வரவேற்று ஓதுவார்களை அனுப்பி வைத்த தீட்சிதர்கள், அதன் பிறகு திருச்சிற்றம்பலத்தை கழுவி, பரிகார பூஜை நடத்தி தீட்டுக் கழித்துள்ளனராம்.

இது சிதம்பரத்தில் உள்ள தமிழ் ஆர்வலர்களையும், சிவனடியார்களையும் பெரும் அதிர்ச்சியில் ஆழ்த்தியுள்ளது.

இதுகுறித்து போராட்டக் குழுவைச் சேர்ந்த செளந்தரபாண்டியன் என்பவர் கூறுகையில், ஓதுவார்களும் சிவனடியார்களும் தேவாரம் பாடி விட்டு போன பின்னர் திருச்சிற்றம்பலத்தை நன்றாக குழு, தீட்டுக் கழித்து, பரிகார பூஜை செய்துள்ளனர் தீட்சிதர்கள்.

இது தமிழுக்கும், தமிழர்களுக்கும், தமிழகத்திற்கும் பெரும் இழுக்கு விளைவிக்கும் செயலாகும். இந்த செயலில் ஈடுபட்ட தீட்சிதர்கள் மீது கடும் நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்றார்.

India tiger population declines

There has been a sharp decline in the number of tigers in India
India's tiger population has fallen drastically during the past five years, according to a new government census.

The increasingly endangered animals' numbers have fallen to 1,411, down from 3,642 in the last major survey in 2002.

Wildlife activists blame poaching and urbanisation for the decline and say the authorities must do more.

Last year, federal authorities announced the creation of a special force to protect tigers. But it is unclear whether it has worked.

The latest census, released on Tuesday, said that there had been a decline in tiger population all over India.

The only exception was the southern state of Tamil Nadu where the animals' numbers had gone up to 76 from 60 five years ago.

'Time to act'

Counting could not be carried out in the states of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand due to law and order problems, the report said.

And the exercise was still going on in Sundarbans in the eastern state of West Bengal, the report added.

Rajesh Gopal of India's Project Tiger said the census showed that "though the tiger has suffered due to direct poaching, loss of quality habitat and loss of its prey, there is still hope".

Wildlife experts say urgent efforts should be made to save the animals.

"It is now time to act and save tigers from human beings. We have to create inviolate areas for tigers and provide modern weapons to forest guards," conservationist Valmik Thapar told Hindustan Times newspaper.

Experts blame the government for failing to crack down on poachers and the illegal trade in tiger skins.

Tigers are poached for their body parts - skins are prized for fashion and tiger bones are used for oriental medicines.

Tiger pelts can fetch up to $12,500 in China.

According to reports, there were 40,000 tigers in India a century ago.

The country is home to 40% of the world's tigers, with 23 tiger reserves in 17 states.

* Adbrite - Sell space on your site for text ads

* Amazon Affiliate Program - Easily create a store or shopping section on your site instead of sending your visitors to Amazon. Amazon handles the shopping cart and fulfillment.

* Amazon Seller - Sell your stuff on Amazon

* Associated Content - If you write a story, how-to, rant, etc. you can submit it to them and they will pay you $3-$20 per article if they like it

* Azoogleads - Another ad program. They do have some decent companies lined up as advertisers. You provide space, they'll provide an ad.

* BidVertiser - PPC (pay per click) program with a low $10 payout amount.

* Bravenet - These guys offer a ton of services for webmasters and blog owners. Although I feel like I was spammed for a while, it has ceased and they'll pay you $1 for each person you send over

* Blog - Start a blog and consistently write excellent content. With good ad placement, you may make some money.

* Business Opportunities Blog - I am adding this because I am a subscriber to their site and I see ideas everyday that could result in making money. A lot of the ideas pertain to online businesses. If you are an aspiring entrepreneur, it's a good reference.

* Cafepress - You provide a design, they'll toss it on a T-Shirt, Hat, etc. No upfront costs. Get a free online shop and promote your products on your website.

* Chitika - Their eMiniMalls service has shown great results for many Bloggers and site owners. You choose a keyword and they show relevant products on your site using a pretty unique interface.

* Clickbank - Another Affiliate Program site with 10,000+ products to advertise

* ClicknWork - Get paid $5-$150 per hour for basically doing freelance work on a per-assignment basis. You have to pass a pretty tough test to get in.

* Clicksor - These are the guys that generate contextual ads on sites that show up when you hover over a double-underlined word.

* Commission Junction - If you have a site, you can join Commission Junction. Once enrolled for free, you can choose companies whose ads are pertinent to your site. Companies have the ultimate say on working with you. There are easily over 1,000 companies to choose from here.

* CreamAid - For blogs only, advertisers provide you with a topic and you write about it on your site. To do this, you have to install a flash widget into your blog post. The more people you bring into the conversation through the widget, the more you get paid. It's difficult to explain.

* eefoof - Think of it as YouTube + Flickr + Music. You add original content and they pay you based on the visitors you attract.

* Ether - If you are an expert on something, Ether provides a way for people to pay you to talk about it in a one-on-one setting. If you want to charge $250/hr, that's fine. You have to do all the advertising so you should have a blog or site already established.

* eBay - Come on, you know what this is. Gather your junk and sell it!

* eBay Stores - If you have a real store and want to sell your stuff online, this is a decent option to get you started.

* ELance - Name gives it away. Programmers, Codes, Web Designers, Writers, Editors, can look for freelance opportunities.

* Feedvertising - This is an arm of Text Link Ads and is currently only good for Wordpress 2.0 Users. This does me no good currently, but as you can guess, they place ads in your feed(s).

* Feedburner - Not only are they the best place to house your feeds, they will also add ads to your feed and website. You get paid per impression.

* Google Adsense - Come on, you don't need an explanation. These ads are all over the place. Google displays relevant ads based on your site's content

* Google Adwords - Create simple text ads and choose keywords that determine when they are displayed. This is where the Adsense Content comes from. You do not need a site for this.

* SHUT DOWN Google Answers - If you are good, Google will pay you to answer questions in your specialty. Questions all come from normal people like you and me. You can get paid $2.50+ per answer you provide.

* H3.com - Get paid to fill jobs. Commissions range from $50-$5,000. It all depends on how tough the job is to fill and how desperate the hiring company is. This is another one that's tough to explain.

* Indeed.com - Add their job board to your site. They then post jobs based on the geographic location of visitors and the position types you pre-select. I tried it and I they continually report that I sent 0 visitors and I know that's not right. Nevertheless, I may have an isolated problem so they make the list.

* InnerSell - If you have a customer that wants to buy something you cannot sell, you can sell the lead here.

* Jellyfish - This is a shopping site that pays you a percentage of the purchases made by people you refer. They are not part of a wider affiliate program so you do it direct.

* Jigsaw - It's a pretty flaky model but if you have a Rolodex full of good contacts, you can sell them here. I can't make sense of it but it looks like you get $0.10 per profile.

* KarmaOne - They are basically a recruiting website. If you fill one of their jobs by finding a good candidate, you'll get paid anywhere from $50-$12,000. It all depends on how desperate the hiring company is.

* LinkShare.com - If you have a site, you can join Linkshare. Once enrolled for free, you can choose companies whose ads are pertinent to your site. Companies have the ultimate say on working with you. Like Commission Junction, there are a ton of companies waiting to evaluate your site.

* Microsoft Adcenter - Bid on keywords and Microsoft places your created ads then they are searched for. This is similar to Google Adwords. You do not need a site for this.

* Overstock.com - Sell your stuff on Overstock.com

* Pageflakes - This is a company that developed a user-defined Ajax homepage to show feeds, flickr photos, and a ton of other things. Think of it as a replacement for your Google Homepage. Anyway - they'll pay you $1 per referral that you send over. They are not part of a wider affiliate program so you do it direct. This one is pretty simple.

* Pay Per Post - I don't agree with this model entirely but they have advertisers that will pay you to write about their products on your blog.

* Pheedo - If you have an RSS feed, run it through Pheedo. Like Feedburner, they can include ads into your feed and if you really become large, advertisers will pay a premium for you to show their ads.

* Shareasale.com - I've never really worked with them but I do have an account. They are similar to Commission Junction and Linkshare however they seem to have lower tiered companies with advertising offers.

* Shoemoney - This is a blog that can teach you a ton on making money online. I've spent hours reading his old stuff.

* Software Judge - They will pay you up to $50 to review software.

* Text Link Ads - I have never made a dime here but I know people that have. You can earn by sending advertisers to them or by selling spots on your site. You must have a real site or blog to do this - nothing on a shared domain (i.e. /blogspot).

* Vibrant Media - Don't bother unless your site has 500,000 page views of text based content a month. If you have that readership, these are the guys that display bubble box ads to underlined words on your site.

* West Work At Home Agent - Not entirely online but this is worth a mention because it's won awards and is very legitimate. If you are an at-home Mom or free-lancer without work, you should check this out.

* Yahoo Publisher Network- This is the Yahoo version of Google Adsense.

Climate change - Food shortage for the coming decades

Some of the world's poorest regions could face severe food shortages in the coming decades thanks to climate change, say researchers who have consulted the most sophisticated climate models to predict where crop losses are likely.

According to those models, the world's average temperature could rise by 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit in the next 20 years. The difference may seem small in abstract, but coupled with changes in rainfall, it could have dramatic effects on the growing seasons of important crops.

Most of the world's 1 billion poor depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, points out David Lobell, lead author of a new paper on the predictions and a senior research scholar at Stanford University's Program on Food Security and the Environment (FSE).

"Unfortunately," he said in a statement, "agriculture is also the human enterprise most vulnerable to changes in climate."

To figure out which regions might be hit the hardest, Lobell and his colleagues used 20 climate models, focusing on poor regions in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Their findings will be published in the Feb. 1 issue of the journal Science.

"We decided that a systematic look at the data might be helpful in identifying which crops and regions have the worst, or best, prospects," Lobell told Discovery News.

Though more rain -- and more crops -- are predicted for a few of those regions, the vast majority are drying up.

The researchers also compared the climate projections to past data on what people eat. Like a farmer's almanac, information on how temperature swings and rainfall patterns have affected growing seasons in the past gave them an idea of what to expect in the future.

The prospects are grim.

Their analysis revealed two "hunger hotspots" -- southern Africa and South Asia -- where regional staples such as maize and rice could drop by 10 percent or more. Thanks - Discovery channel

Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiar

Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiar was one of the greatest Tamil poets, a prolific writer, philosopher and a great visionary of immense genius. He was also one of the most prominent leaders of the Indian independence movement. His national integration songs earned him the title "Desiya Kavi" (National Poet). His patriotic songs emphasize nationalism, unity of India, equality of men and the greatness of Tamil language.

Bharathiar was born on December 11, 1882 in Ettayapuram, which is now part of Thoothukudi District. Bharathiar was educated at a local high school where his talents as a poet were recognized even at the age of 11. He had voracious appetite for learning ancient and contemporary Tamil literature and had gifted intellect to derive astonishing truths from ancient poems.

At the age of 22, he became a Tamil teacher at Setupati High School in Madurai and the same year he was appointed as Assistant Editor of a daily newspaper called "Swadesamitran". In 1906, he was editor of a weekly magazine called "India".

By 1912, Bharathiar was already a legend in South India and his political meetings were attracting multitudes of young patriots, ready to join the non-violent movement for attaining freedom from the British rule.

Bharathiar died on September 11, 1921, at the young age of 39.

The legacy of the poet however endures forever.

Thirukkural

Thirukkural is the masterpiece of Tamil literature with the highest and purest expressions of human thought. It is written in the form of couplets (two line poems) expounding various aspects of life. It contains 1330 couplets, divided into 133 chapters of 10 couplets each.

Thirukkural has three major parts. The first part deals with Aram (Virtue), the moral value of human life. It has 38 chapters. The second part is on Porul (Wealth), the socio economic values of men in a civilized society. It has 70 chapters. The third part is on Kamam or Inbam (Love), the psychological values of life. It has 25 chapters.

Thirukkural was written by Thiruvalluvar, who is believed to have born 30 years before Jesus Christ. The Tamil Calendar is dated from that period and referred as Thiruvalluvar Aandu (Year). We find Thiruvalluvar as a moral philosopher, political scientist and master of public administration in the first two parts of Thirukkural. We find him to be a creative artist in the third part, depicting the fascinating aspects of lovers.

Thirukkural's immortality and universality are unquestionable. Its ethics and values are applicable to all religions, countries and time. It has been translated in over 60 languages of the world.

The Fort Aguada beach offers gorgeous views that merit a visit. Sinquerim and Candolim are also quiet beaches that afford anonymity.

Whether it's the isolated horizons of the Konkan Coast or the Arabian Sea; the golden sands or the water drenched seashores, every beach in India makes a picture perfect holiday destination.
